Making 10's and 1's!

Hey, hey everyone! We've had a busy last week and a half learning about 10's and 1's in math. Today, we got into pairs and worked together to build different numbers with our 10's rods and 1's. Everyone absolutely rocked it! Here are some photos I took during whole group today :)

The first 3 weeks of 1st grade!!

Hi everyone! It's been a crazy first 3 weeks of school but things are finally settling down!

Here's a gist of what's been going on in the room and what the kids have been learning :)

Math: We have started taking off with our learning in math. Our focus right now is Place Value, and the idea that double digit numbers are composed of a certain number of groups of 10, with some remaining ones left over. i.e. 12 is one group of 10, and 2 extra ones- 10+2. We have been creating various numbers on tens frames to visualize each group of 10, and how many extra ones are left over. From there, we will begin to build our number sense and place value concepts by using our tens rods and ones cubes and working hands on with our manipulatives. We are also starting to introduce Guided Math Centers, in which students will either be working with a teacher, or will be expected to work independently on their own center.

Reading: We have started learning about the characters and setting in a story. Our focus right now is characters and how they can think, feel, and act but also what a character can be i.e. a person, animal, or thing. We've read various picture books with main characters and "other" characters in them to emphasize that characters can be important or not so important and that they come in all shapes and sizes! If you have the chance to read at home, ask your child questions about the characters in the story, they might just surprise you! We will go more in depth with setting next week and touch on how settings need to be different in different stories in order for the story to make sense!

Writing: We are dipping our toes into narrative writing at the moment! Our focus is taking the big moment and extracting the smaller moments in it to create a story! These are called small moment stories and will be our focus for the next few weeks! Your child will be bringing home a small moment story at the end of next week so keep an eye out for that!

Science: We are finishing up our study on weather and moving into studying the seasons! We've talked all about the 4 types of precipitation as well as what happens to ice when it's hot out and what happens to water when it's cold out. We've EVEN talked about evaporation! Ask your child about the fun experiments we've done, I'm sure they would be happy to tell you!

If you stuck with me through this whole blog post, I commend you! I'll be posting some pictures later today of our math manipulative time! Thanks for checking in! :)
